My Proud Piece

I am proud of my poem, Cloaking Darkness, because it expresses the fact that many people experience forms of depression, whether the case is mild or severe. Some people in my family deal with their depression in a responsible manner, but many others do not. And that causes families to break apart, all because of a situation that they didn't want to address or resolve. I wanted to take a look at the feelings that the individuals are said to have and it gave me a sense of what they were thinking and feeling.

I am proud of this piece, this poem, this creation of mine.

Dear Christopher Paolini,

I loved the Eragon series, but my favorite was Inheritance. I hope you don’t mind a few comments, questions and ideas.

This book was a fascinating read that twisted and turned, giving you new possibilities and settings at each corner. I enjoyed the diverse races and cultures and the way you described them. You explained the way the dwarves chose a ruler and the complexities that surrounding killing a shade. I enjoyed these bits of information because they helped me understand later events. I truly enjoyed the added detail for it granted me a better understanding of the characters’ feelings, actions and motives. I loved how it was harder to read, with all the descriptive language and how you wove the tapestry.

The most pressing questions I have for you are the ones I have mulled over for quite some time. I would really like to know how you came up with the races that inhabited Alaegaesia. Did someone or something inspire you with the way they acted or reacted? Another question is; how did you create the different dialects spoken by each race? Did you pick random bits of gibberish that sounded good together, or do those “words” have deeper meanings? But the one I want the most answered is; how is Eragon going to live, without going batty, across the world, away from his family? I would love these questions answered thoroughly because they constantly pester me.

The only part of the book I didn’t enjoy was the cliff-hanger ending, where Eragon sets out on an adventure across the world, and he knows he’ll never return. Personally, that leaves you wanting more, but since this is the last book in the series, it leaves you slightly perturbed and it ruins the book. I think it would have been better if you had added an epilogue that was, say, ten to twenty years into the future, from the end of the book. That would have kept me fully satisfied with the series.

Sincerely,
Breeze

My Two-Sided Donut Story

Two-Sided Donut Story

To: My Family

I tiptoed upstairs to my bedroom and sat down on the edge of my bed and I sighed, goodness, why did I have to crash the darned car? I should have said no to Rushika, I should have, I should, I should have, but I didn’t!

My mom had been furious! At first she’d been worried about my wellbeing, but after it was apparent that I was fine she really blew her top. It was like poisoned-tipped arrows had been thrown at me, it was painful. I wasn’t allowed to read for three months and I was the one responsible for paying the damage and insurance fees. I had hung my head as we’d sat in the car silent. No radio, no talking, no nothing, I was in big trouble.

When we’d gotten home my mom had said I had to go straight to bed and I did, with dragging feet that felt like lead. I felt so ashamed, and it was an awful feeling.

When my mom phoned my dad the next day, he was in Holland on a business trip. My mom was slightly mad at him because he told us stories about the donuts that he used to do with his friends, and he used to do donuts with us in the car, so that was apparently bad role modeling. I have to admit they are pretty awesome, but it’s not fun to risk someone’s life.

I’m going to be in trouble for a while, but it’s not so bad knowing that it will get better, someday.

To: My Friends
As I walked into school the next day I felt pain shoot up my neck and I grimaced, that’s what I got for crashing that confounded car. Last night I’d haed this dream that kept bringing me back to the accident. My head had been thrown forward and then snapped back, the cause of the neck pains, and I kept seeing red…the red blood of my friend as she slowly, and painfully died. I had woken up screaming and sweating profusely.
As I sat down at my desk my friend looked very much alive as she babbled on about how worried her boyfriend (the second one this month!) was about her when he’d found out about the crash. For some reason all she ever thinks about these days is her boyfriend. And okay, maybe he’s considered hot, funny and a sweet guy, but seriously, guys are not the only important things on earth!
Today though, the main topic, for her at least, was the fancy dress she was going to wear to prom, just for him. Personally, I think she’s a crazy, lovesick girl. I’m seriously thinking of talking to her sister (who’s a doctor) about a cure for Rushika.
Kanchini wasn’t really listening, she was pretty intent on finishing up the notes we were supposed to complete. I think Kan is going with her crush to prom, but who knows, she might end up going with someone completely different! After all, she is a diva.
Then, Rushika whipped around and was like, “Hey Breeze! Guess what? I told everyone about the crash and how my boyfriend reacted, he’s so totally sweet!” That was pretty much one of the most horrific things said to me. Why would she tell ANYONE about the crash? Like I said, she’s crazy!

Logo Write-Up

My Logo Write-Up

I chose a picture of a fighter jet because I adore the feeling of wind in my hair or the rush I get when a plane starts speeding up and as it lifts up, in to a clear sky. I love how you look down and see puffy clouds, ones that look like the perfect bed, or the most delicious cotton candy. Another reason I chose this picture is because I dream of piloting my own plane, racing across the sky. I want to be like my grandpa, he flew in the Canadian air force. And lastly, I chose it because I want to go fast, because down here I never seem to be fast enough.

Irrigation

Enduring Contribution

The Enduring Contribution of Irrigation

Irrigation allowed us to farm larger lands and feed more people, as well as protect the plants from frost and it also allowed us to suppress weed growth in grain fields. We became larger cities, towns, countries and so much more because of these reasons. The larger the land and the longer you can grow things and the lesser amount of pests mean you can feed more people, and so more babies are born, and then families grow. We also are less hungry, so there is less chance of us getting sick.
